40 years ago, a group of engineers at Lucas Aerospace UK responded to their impending redundancy with an ambitious plan. They designed socially useful and environmentally sustainable alternatives to the weapons and fighter planes that Lucas Aerospace manufactured: including wind turbines, a hybrid car, heat pumps and energy-efficient homes.
"The Plan" shows how the engineers developed their plan in the 1970s and discusses the social, environmental and political significance of their initiative.
It is a story that fills the void of almost 50 years in which society was subordinated to so-called free markets. It is a story we should know and one that has much to offer to all who want to curb the climate catastrophe.
