The protests by 0il workers in Zhanaozen were part of a campaign for better pay and conditions by workers in the western Kazakhstan oilfield that started in May. This grew to a strike of about 16,000 people in June and continued through the year, culminating eventually in violence and severe state repression in December. In June though, the campaign was still at the peaceful occupation stage. This oil worker talks about why he is there.
