Frauke explains what happened in 2023 and how the hospital staff are preparing to fight for relief.

kanalB.org

Frauke is a nurse at the university hospital in Leipzig, Germany. She talks about what has happened during the strike in 2023 and about how the strike gave her hope. The hospital workers were able to enforce a reduction of working time from 40 to 38.5 hours and a wage increase between 9 and 16%.

After the strike, Frauke and her colleagues founded a hospital workers' group. They are preparing themselves to enforce a collective relief agreement for better staffing levels.

The video was created as part of our workshop series "How to labournet.tv?".

Strategies Against The Far-Right At Work

3716
ltv

We asked workers and trade unionists how the far-wight trend in companies can be stopped and reversed.

kanalB.org

In Germany, openly right-wing colleagues have always been present at the shop floor. For some years now, however, their influence has been steadily growing. They are increasingly influencing the atmosphere in the workplace and forcing their way into works council structures. The ‘Zentrum’ association in particular is present as an arm of the AfD in some companies in the automotive industry and wants to extend its influence to other sectors.

We spoke to five colleagues to find out the extent of the problem, how they are organising against the right-wing in the workplace, how the rise of the far-right can be explained and how it can be stopped.

‘We have industrial companies where people work three or four shifts, at weekends, just above the minimum wage. And anyone who has ever worked a four-shift system knows what that means. And they know, we won't last until we retire. And we don't earn enough to go out. And they ask themselves, what am I working for, what am I paying into the pension scheme for? And they know: at some point I'll be sorted out of the company because I can't do it anymore, I'll get a kick and that'll be it, thank you! And that's just the kind of bitterness that's there and that's where we as a trade union can start to change conditions by fighting for better working and wage conditions, where we manage to move a lot in individual companies in the East, where there is a great deal of discontent that also translates into activity. We can initiate a lot in the companies, but we will reach certain limits if we don't also manage to change course socially. It is not enough for the trade unions to limit themselves purely to the workplace struggle; they also need to take a much more political stance and act and provide alternative political answers. That would actually be the task of the left, to prepare the ground for this and to do it. That is the necessity that I see and where I realise that there is a great need for action.’ (Olaf Klenke, NGG East - from the video)

"Bringing political ideas into harmony with your own life is actually a good thing." (from the video)

Marco has been trying to organise his work according to political aspects for three decades, sometimes strategically, together with other comrades. He describes how this can be organised as a collective practice and why choosing your job strategically is also a good idea for the climate movement.

Our film "Air To Breathe" (Germany, 2019) is about comrades who started working at Opel in Bochum in the early 1970s for similar reasons.

In September of 2023, Amazon Workers International (AWI) organized a Caravan to visit Amazon Warehouses in Germany and Poland. Together with their supporters they distributed their newly published newspaper "The Amazon Worker". It is written in seven different languages to reach as many people of the diverse workforce at Amazon as possible.
Their intention is to show that workers can be united across borders in their demands for better working conditions.

With music by Christian Krähling, late Amazon Workers International member, we follow them for one day of their Caravan which lasted six days and included nine warehouses along the German Polish border.

Revolution, War and the Neighborhood Resistance Committees

Interview with Marwan Osman (Sudan Uprising Germany) and Mai Shatta (Kurve Wüstrow) from July 2023. Both are Sudanese activists in exile.

There are over 5,200 Neighborhood Resistance Committees in Sudan. They were formed from 2013 onwards because the Islamist government had destroyed the trade unions who had brought down dictators in 1964 and 1985.

In 2016, there was nevertheless a very successful political strike that lasted 3 days. After that, Neighbourhood Resistance Committees started to play an important political role.

The revolution in Sudan started in December 2018, with mass protests against the dictator Omar Al-Bashir , who had ruled the country for 30 years. He was overthrown in April 2019. A military council was then installed to form a transitional government. The people, however, demanded a civilian government and organised a sit-in in front of the military headquarters in Khartoum, with up to 100,000 people meeting in the evening. On 3 June 2019, the military council brutally dissolved the sit-in and killed 3,000 people: the Khartoum massacre.

Since state structures collapsed when the war began in April 2023, the Neigborhood Resistance Committees have acted as a de facto alternative government. They organise water, food, medical care, psychosocial support for those bombed out, safe shelters for women. They are currently trying to organise the harvesting of crops. Nevertheless, Sudan is in a humanitarian emergency situation. The world remains silent about the situation, while foreign capital buys up the fertile land. At the same time, the population lacks the most basic necessities, hardly any humanitarian aid arrives, because the big aid organisations do not recognise the Neighbourhood Resistance Committees.

Millions of people will starve to death if the harvest is not brought in.

"What we need from the global leftists is just to spread the word and put enough pressure on their governments to lift their hands from the Sudanese internal politics. If the international community distanced itself from supporting these dictators in Sudan, I think the Sudanese people are able to deal with them." at a rally in front of the Labour Court in Berlin

kanalB.org

Former Gorillas worker Duygu Kaya was fired because of her participation in a wildcat strike in 2021 in Berlin. (We reported)

Together with two colleagues, she sued against her dismissal, pointing to the right to strike as a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Constitution and the European Social Charter. However, at their first trial in April 2022, the dismissals were upheld. The court followed the view that strikes that take place without a union calling for them are illegal and therefore do not protect against dismissal. The former Gorillas workers challenged this ruling and appealed.

On April 25, 2023, the appeal hearing took place, with a rally and a few dozen supporters and activists from the Campaign for a Comprehensive Right to Strike and a Last Generation activist.

The video is part of our special page about the struggle for a comprehensive right to strike.

Event with ex-GKN workers and the german climate movement on 4 march, 2023

On 4 March 2023, an important event took place with ex-GKN workers from Firenze and the german climate movement.

The former workers of the GKN car parts factory have been occupying their factory over the last 20 months, and are fighting to keep their jobs and to be able to produce something ecologically meaningful. As the "resistant village of Asterix and Obelix" in an ocean of capitalist destruction.

Representatives of Fridays For Future and the campaign reported on the rapprochement between the climate and workers' movements that we have seen at the ongoing public transport strikes and the climate strike of 3 March 2023.

A landmark event, recommended for all those who feel disheartened and disoriented.

The event was organised by Collettivo di Fabbrica ex-GKN, Fridays For Future, Ende Gelände, Sand im Getriebe, IL, Die Linke SDS, Genug Ist Genug, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Movement Hub and the Italian partisan association A.N.P.I.

On 9 July 2021, the 422 workers at the GKN factory in Campi Bisenzio near Florence received their dismissal, by email. They immediately met in front of the factory, scared away the management's bodyguards and have been holding an open-ended meeting at the factory ever since.

We visited the workers in June 2022.

They talk about how they are rooted in the territory, why 30,000 people demonstrated with them. They explain why they put their struggle under the slogan "Insorgiamo!" ("Let's rise up!"), the slogan of the italian partisans who liberated Florence in 1944.

But they also talk about their collaboration with climate activists and what they would like to produce. But as things stand today, it is not the workers who are responsible for the ecological damage caused by production: "Nobody asked me what I would like to produce when they hired me. They hired me and that was it." (from the video)

The autonomous dockworkers' collective CALP has existed since 2011 and is an important institution in Genoa. We interviewed the spokesperson José Nivoi in June 2022.

In 2019, the dockworkers "prevented the loading of generators for the Saudi military on the Saudi Arabian freighter Bahri Yanbu in the port of Genoa, in order not to become accomplices in the war in Yemen." (Informationsstelle MIlitarisierung) With this and similar actions, they generated a lot of attention and achieved that the shipping of weapons to war theatres was banned in the port of Genoa.

The CALP is also actively involved with other groups in driving fascist groups out of the city.

Since last year, the CALP has been organising a transnational anti-militarist strike of dock workers.

FarplasİscisiYalnızDeğildir - Farplas workers are not alone

kanalB.org

"Direne direne kazanacağız - By resisting and resisting we will win." (from the video)

On January 31, Turkish police detained around 200 workers of the car components manufacturer Farplas.
They had occupied the company's factory in protest against low wages and the company's attempt to prevent unionization.
The protests began on January 19 with a first work stoppage. The reason was insufficient wages and an equally insufficient offer of a wage increase from the company.
In the course of the protests, more and more workers joined the Birleşik Metal-İş union.
As a result, Farplas fired 150 of the workers and by now union members. The reason given: They had participated in the strike on January 19 and obstructed the company's work.
In response to this attempt to weaken the union, union members and workers, together with their dismissed colleagues, occupied the factory on January 31.
While the police detained the occupiers, other Birleşik Metal-İş members from neighboring companies gathered in front of the factory. They blocked the eviction of the detainees until the police used force to end the resistance.
The detained union members and workers were released after making a statement. Some reported experiences of violence.
The protests in front of the factory continue, now again together with the dismissed workers.

On Friday 13th August, as part of the german action day , food delivery riders from delivery companies including Lieferando, Wolt and Gorillas came together to protest against union busting and precarious working conditions. Together they marched to the offices of each company to make their voices heard and to prove that they will not be intimidated by management.

Delivery riders across companies face precarious contracts, repression and firing for their union activities. Riders at Wolt are facing pay cuts, and riders from all companies reported not having recieved sick pay, or having their wages completely witheld.

In response they have been developing different organising strate, gies, through online chats, offline meetups, works council elections, blockades and protests. Most recently on September 20th Gorillas riders took the company to court to contest the legality of continuously hiring new employees on 1 year temporary contracts.

We interviewed a few food delivery riders on Friday 13th to ask why they were protesting

The logistics workers' movement in Italiy

kanalB.net

Since 2008 in northern Italy, unusual things have been happening. Companies, the political class and the media are using the onset of the crisis to further undermine workers' rights, which have been, up until now, crushed. On the other side, a lively and strong resistance has been forming at the bottom end of the wage scale.

Of all people, it is the precarious and largely migrant workers in the logistics sector who have, through solidarity and effective organising, been successful in overcoming their isolation and degrading working conditions. A struggle that hasn't just changed their working conditions but has changed their whole lives.

"I'd been talking with the girls since 2012 because I came to know about this union called SI Cobas. But there has been a lot of fear because they put you in a condition of servility, you are enslaved to the point that you can't even say 'a'. You don't say anything, you work item after item after item... So I'd been speaking with the girls since 2012 and I don't know how it happened. It was good luck." (Yoox Worker, from the film)

On June 10, 2021 Gorillas workers protested in front of the warehouse in Berlin/Prenzlauer Berg. They raise three demands: the reinstatement of their colleague Santiago who was fired yesterday, no terminations without previous warnings, and the abolition of the probation period (that is currently 6 months).

"Gorillas without the riders cannot do any business. Those guys who are giving us corporate speech all day long and trying to disperse the crowd, - they cannot take 25 kilo backpacks on their back and deliver to customers all day long! They are not gonna do that. ...  We will eventually win. There is no way that we can lose", says a rider in the video.

Gorillas is a new, quickly expanding food delivery service.
On June 3, 2021 the first General Assembly took place in Berlin. 200 workers voted an electoral council for the upcoming first works council election.

The atmosphere outside was odd, because management tried to make workers go to a beer garden with them instead of participating in the assembly.

We asked Philipp Bihouix, author of "The age of Low Tech" if he thinks that there can be a Green Capitalism.

"We just have to think about what it means to have 2% economic growth per year. It means that we double the GDP or the energy consumption every 37 years. We would have to multiply it by 7 every 100 years and every 1000 years by 390 million. Who can believe that in the year 3000 we will have vehicles that are 390 million times more efficient? Or that the GDP will be 390 million times bigger and at the same time we will have cut our emissions by half, 1/3 or 1/4? That's of course totally utopian!"

How does a society look that is capable of stopping climate change?

kanalB.org

Since the UN Conferences on Climate started in 1992, the annual CO2 emissions have not decreased. In fact, they increased by over 60%. - Why?
How would a society look that is capable of stopping climate change? And how can we get there?

In the global climate movement, it is becoming more and more common sense that we need a systemic change. But what kind of system do we want, and how do we get rid of the old one? In this film we discuss why there can be no such thing as green capitalism and we envision how a profound transformation of society could look.

In a situation of rapidly growing public awareness of the devastating consequences of climate change, The Loud Spring adresses the elephant in the room: where does the power to actually change things come from?

Taking Sides - The Story Of The Workers Aid Convoys

Between 1992 and 1995, British activists organised aid convoys to Tuzla to support the local working class.

kanalB.org

Activist Bob Myers talks about a little-known internationalist action during the war in Yugoslavia. Between 1992 and 1995, British activists organised aid convoys to Tuzla. The convoys were not meant as humanitarian aid, but as an attempt to support the local working class: In the middle of the war, the people in Tuzla refused to be incited against each other along their ethnicity.

Tuzla lies in a mining area with a long history of workers' resistance, reaching as far back as the miners' strike of 1922. During the Yugoslavian war this region was besieged from all sides in the attempt to destroy the multi-ethnic society of the region.

In 1984/85 the miners in the Tuzla region had donated one day's wage per month to the striking British miners. In 1992 there was a call for the British miners to return this solidarity. Thus began the story of the aid convoys to Tusla.

An example of international solidarity from below.

Here's a film about the Bosnian Spring in 2014, the biggest social movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina since the war.

40 years of opposition at Opel car plant in Bochum

kanalB.net

Air To Breathe is a film about a group of militant workers inside the Opel car plant in Bochum, Germany. The group was founded in 1972, initially with the help of revolutionaries from the 1968 movement.

For over 40 years, the group fought for better working conditions inside the plant. Over time, their incessant rank-and-file activism made the workers in Bochum the most radical in the entire German metal sector: Opel Bochum saw several wildcat strikes, and a persistent and successful fight for the reduction of daily working time. The group even attempted to build up direct links between different workforces of General Motors in Europe to fight back against the raise to the bottom of wages and working conditions in a situation of worldwide competition for investments amongst GM plants.

Their activities culminated in a six days wildcat strike in 2004.

Interview with Women in Exile and Friends, a group formed in 2011 by refugee women to fight for their rights and campaign against discrimination, injustice and detention centres.

kanalB.org

labournet.tv visited the “Building Bridges Festival” organized on Oranienplatz in Berlin by the Women in Exile and Friends, a group formed in 2011 by refugee women to fight for their rights and campaign against discrimination, injustice and detention centres.

We interviewed Elisabeth Ngari to learn about the living and working conditions in refugee camps in Germany. People living in refugee camps are paid 80 cents an hour (€60 a month) to work as cleaners in the camp. Elisabeth explained that people in refugee camps know that they are being paid badly but they don’t have any other choice to get work. Those who have not been granted refugee status cannot work outside, and have to live on €200-300 social money. As a punishment for if you don’t bring the correct papers to get deported, some people are not given social money but are given vouchers instead. Collecting the vouchers is also an issue as they don't have money to pay for the bus.

It is difficult for refugees to refuse to work for 80 cents, even if they would rather spend their time finding better opportunities.

“When they refuse they are told they will cut their social money. One woman said no I can’t do it because she was going to language classes. But the Heimleitung said she had to do the job, they said they would recommend her money is cut...It started in the US with a $1 job for prisoners, it is also happening in England for people who are in detention camps, they are also working for £1. It is a colonial system of oppressing people.”

Those living in the refugee camps face many health issues, and social workers influence who in the refugee camp can receive treatment or not. Treatments are often not successful, without explanations or translations for the patient. With many people living together in one room and overcrowded kitchen and bathroom facilities, conflict and sexual violence are common. In April 2019 Kenyan woman Rita Awuor Ojunge was murdered in the forest in Brandenburg, close to the refugee camp Höhenleipisch where she lived.

Dismissed Flormar workers visit Berlin

3474
ltv

In February 2019 we invited two dismissed workers from the Flormar factory in Turkey to come to Berlin and organised a protest outside of a Yves Rocher cosmetic shop in Alexanderplatz.

kanalB.org

In early 2018 135 mainly female workers at a Flormar cosmetic factory in Gebze, Turkey were fired for joining the trade union Petrol İş. Since then they have been protesting every day for over nine months in front of the factory doors, claiming their right to freedom of association and demanding their jobs back.

Their struggle comes at a time when organised labour is facing ever increasing repression in Turkey, and this women-led campaign has sent ripples across Turkey and the world.

Flormar's parent company Yves Rocher based in France owns 51% of the company, but Yves Rocher has so far ignored the workers demands for negotiation and refused to take responsibilty for union busting in their factory.

In February 2019 labournet.tv and Frauen*streik Berlin invited two women dismissed from the factory to Berlin and organised a protest outside of a Yves Rocher cosmetic shop in Alexanderplatz. Solidarity protests by labour and feminist groups have also sprung up in cities around Turkey and France under the campaign's slogan "not Flormar, but the resistance makes us beautiful" and the campaign keep growing.

The Flormar workers campaign is not just the most iconic female led workers campaign at the moment in Turkey, but it is also situated in the heart of the country's industrial zone near Istanbul. Their determination represents much more than just their demand for reinstatement - because when the Flormar workers win it will also offer hope to those organising in other factories in the region who want to exercise their right to join a union and demand better conditions.

Therefore it is up to all of us to support the Flormar workers by spreading the word, calling on a boycott of Yves Rocher and organising solidarity actions in our cities.

Fast food workers strike across the UK

ltv

kanalB.org

Thursday 4th October 2018, fast food workers organised a huge strike across the UK against poverty pay. McDonalds, TGI Fridays and Whetherspoons restaurants were shut down and UberEats and Deliveroo deliveries were disrupted. Workers from London, Cambridge, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and a dozen other cities joined forces chanting “I believe that we can win”.

“I’m striking for an end to zero hours contracts and for a higher minimum wage. We are asking for £10 an hour” said one striking McDonalds worker in Cambridge. Another TGI Fridays striker explained how they began to organise after 40% of their tips were given to kitchen staff, to avoid giving kitchen workers a payrise.

“I know people who are living on their friends’ sofas because they can’t afford their rent. Some people have to skip food for the day so they can stay in their house” explained one young Wetherspoons worker. As well as no regular hours or guaranteed income, these fast food restaurants pay youth rates, meaning any worker under the age of 21 earns as low as £5.90 an hour.

UberEats and Deliveroo couriers also joined the fast food shutdown, refusing to take orders in cities in England, Wales and Scotland. The self employed couriers have no legal right to a minimum wage and have no guaranteed income if business is slow, leaving many of them struggling to survive from one week to the next.

“we are striking to demand a minimum of £5 per delivery, that will enable us to make the minimum wage” said one of the couriers interviewed at the strike in Glasgow.  “We’ve decided to strike today because it’s the same day that workers in McDonalds and Wetherspoons are striking. They are people we work with quite a bit, so we wanted to show our solidarity”.

Zero hour contracts and poverty wages are widespread in the hospitality sector, but union density is well below average at 2.5%. This fast food shut down is as an amazing example of the strength of coordinated action, and shows that workers in supposedly hard to organise workplaces are standing up for themselves with more determination and willpower than ever.

“I feel like people are gaining more confidence now. It’s encouraging to know that we are in this together” concludes the Cambridge McDonalds worker.

The energy behind these strikes and protests will no doubt inspire others to do the same. Organising in the fast food sector with the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and IWW and IWGB courier branches has increased massively over the past couple of years, and it looks like the movement will continue growing. They believe that they can win, and so do we!

Couriers at UberEats have organised wildcat strikes across the UK after the company announced it will cut riders’ pay per food delivery to as low as £2.62 per drop, down from £4.26 (a 40% paycut).

On September 19th more than 300 couriers blocked the street in front of UberEats’ management offices in London chanting “No money no food”. The next day they were back again, and by the weekend UberEats drivers were striking in Plymouth where two out of three McDonalds branches closed their delivery services. Earlier in the month UberEats couriers had also striked in Glasgow and Cardiff.

The drivers are demanding a minimum rate of £5 a drop, a £1 per mile distance payment, an end to the ‘boost’ system (which changes the payment drivers get every hour depending on supply and demand), and no victimisation of striking workers.

In the mean time it has been reported that Uber is in talks to acquire the food delivery company Deliveroo, worth almost $2 billion.

Airport construction workers protest deadly working conditions in Istanbul

Around 2000 workers at the third airport construction site in Istanbul striked against fatalities, poor health and safety, vermin infested dormitories and unpaid wages in September 2018. Over 500 were violently detained with tear gas to break up the protest.

kanalB.org

35,000 workers are building the third airport in Istanbul to be ready by October 2018, set to be the biggest airport in the world. The labour ministry claim that around 27 have died on site, but others report that over 400 workers have been killed by accidents since construction began, including children.

On Friday 14th September two thousand of the workers at the construction site went on strike with the support of İnşaat İş union, against poor health and safety, vermin infested dormitories and unpaid wages. The Turkish police and gendarmerie forced their way into workers' sleeping quarters and violently detained nearly 600 of them using teargas.

“I ask myself, am I human? Don’t I have any value in this country?” says one worker who was interviewed.

The following Monday they went back to work under heavy gendarmerie surveillance and were told they would be denied their wages and will be arrested if they dare to take action again. Many workers have been released but 24 workers were taken to court for exercising their right to freedom of association.

The hashtag supporting the workers, "we are not slaves" was trending on social media and solidarity protests in support of the workers sprung up around Istanbul and Ankara, but were also faced with police repression and arrests.

As of 2018, deaths at work had increased by 10% since the state of emergency was implemented in Turkey in 2016.

In May 2018 the “International Confederation of Labour” was founded in Italy to unite independent unions and worker organisations across frontiers.

kanalB.org

In May 2018 the “International Confederation of Labour” was founded in Italy to unite independent unions and worker organisations across frontiers. We interviewed delegates at the congress to hear about their union activities at home and what they hope will come out of the new confederation.

The United Voices of the World union from London, UK wrote a report on their experience from the conference:

“Delegates and observers from Greece, Brazil, Morocco, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Catalonia, Spain, Poland, United States, Canada, France, Austria and Argentina sent solidarity messages or attended the Congress, which was organised at the headquarters of the Italian independent USI union.

The idea behind the union confederation is to reignite practical international solidarity between workers in struggle that, in the words of Spanish CNT union organiser Miguel Pérez, 'has to be shown in acts that go beyond issuing communiqués or holding pickets of solidarity.'

Italian USI delegates emphasised the historical anarcho-syndicalist and revolutionary-syndicalist origins of many of the participating unions and collectives: ‘Today, and even more so tomorrow, a combative libertarian international trade union organisation is needed to defend workers effectively, and to build a new, free and equal society independently of the traditional political party and union structures.’

Anna Baum, an organiser with the German Free Workers’ Union in Berlin, explained that the new confederation intended to share resources and information across frontiers among independent unions, focussing on workers who work for the same corporation, but in different countries.

‘An emphasis will be made on sharing campaign aims, for instance in fighting for a collective agreement across sectors that includes protecting migrant workers from immigration checks,’ Anna reported.

‘Campaigning and organising resources will be shared on a joint website or platform, and workshops and conferences bringing workers in struggle in other countries such as China and Indonesia, together with Italians, Germans and Polish workers, for example, will also be held, with unions from the wealthier nations financially supporting workers from low income countries to attend.’

There was discussion about coordinating research on international labour laws, and an idea to register the confederation with the International Labour Organisation so as to be able to take cases of abuse of workers’ rights by multinational corporations to international tribunals.

Several union activists from Catalonia, Brazil and Greece emphasised how workers are more frequently organising wildcat strikes, road blockades and other imaginative acts of resistance to counter the lack of response from official trade unions and traditional political parties which have failed to defend workers’ interests.

Mass workers’ migration across frontiers, combined with the increasing ease of communication technology that allows these workers to stay in contact with struggles back home and connect to struggles in their destination country, mean that independent unions and collective organisations should step up their cooperation and, in the words of Bulgarian Autonomous Workers’ union organisers, ‘look towards building an international resistance movement’.

United Voices of the World organiser Claudia Turbet-Delof concluded that the congress had been ‘an enriching experience, especially for me as a feminist, migrant trade unionist, and has stirred profound reflection on what union organising means to me and what we, as workers, hope to achieve.' "

On January 24 2018, Foodora and Deliveroo riders in Berlin have protested their precarious working conditons.

On January 24 2018, Foodora and Deliveroo riders in Berlin have protested against their precarious working conditions. They have to pay for most of the bike repair costs themselves. This leads to many having to ride with bicycles that are not safe, because they can not afford the repair costs.

The drivers dumped a big pile of used pike parts in front of the Delivery Hero office in Mitte to protest against this fact:
"Some of you could throw your whole bicycle onto this pile: They are so worn down."

At the moment, protests of bike couriers are taking place all over the world. On January 1, Deliveroo riders in Haarlem went on strike, and shut down the Deliveroo service for several hours. In Hong Kong this week hundreds of Deliveroo riders went on strike and managed to avert further deterioration of their working conditions.

The wave of strikes by migrant logistics workers in Italy has widened to H&M. In the video from August 20, 2016, we see a blockade of the H&M plant in Casalpusterlegno, Lombardy. The striking workers are pitted against their colleagues who want to start the shift but then, in small groups, change sides and join the strikers.

The strike started on July 28 in Stradella, close to Pavia, and spread to Casalpusterlegno in August. The demands are: normal working hours, an end to the current practice of minimal notice (the evening beforehand) if one has work the next day or not, unlimited full-time contracts, and compliance with the national collective agreement on minimum standards for work in warehouses.

SI Cobas has called for a strike in all XPO warehouses in Italy (XPO is handling logistics for H&M in Italy)!

For this purpose we have been asked to conduct boycott actions against H&M from August 27.

Here the call for the H&M boycott by SI Cobas (English)

In mid-September, Amazon worker activists from Poland and Germany met in Poznan.

kanalB.org

In mid-September 2015, Amazon worker activists from Poland and Germany met in Poznan to further coordinate their workplace struggles. Through earlier meetings, links had been established across the border, enabling workers to communicate directly during strikes in German Amazon warehouses throughout the year, and a slowdown strike in the Poznan warehouse at the end of June 2015.
In the following years, workers' meetings were organized regularly every six months: in Berlin, Paris, Bad Hersfeld, Poznan, Leipzig, Madrid, and Lille.

This video was made at the meeting in Poznan and shows interviews with several workers.

Christian Krähling, Amazon worker and activist from Bad Hersfeld who was present at the meeting, died on December 10, 2020. Amazon Workers International wrote this great obituary about him:

"He showed us that for him the struggle was not just about some collective bargaining agreement but about winning back workers' dignity in a fight with Amazon managers who would daily try to humiliate workers."

Since 2008 in northern Italy, unusual things have been happening. Companies, the polical class and the media are using the onset of the crisis to further undermine workers' rights, which have been, up until now, crushed. On the other side, a lively and strong resistance has been forming at the bottom end of the wage scale.

Now they have been protesting on location for a week. Every day they stay in the cold for 6 hours. Come and visit them! Bring your solidarity and hot beverages!

On Saturday, December 6th at 2pm, a demonstration will take place in order to force the builder Andreas Fettchenhauer and the investor Harald Huth to pay the outstanding wages.  The demonstration also aims at raising the issue of working conditions of migrant workers in Berlin in general.

IKEA dismisses 24workers in Piacenza/Italy because they went on strike

kanalB.org

Since 2011, in Italy, warehouse workers (who are mostly migrant workers) have been fighting for regular working conditions. Through militant actions in many multinational corporations such as IKEA, DHL and TNT, they managed to force their employers to adhere to the national standards. They won against an alliance of foremen, subcontractors, corporations, local political representatives, the police, as well as the big unions and the media. An important part of the radical left and small rank-and-file unions stand by their side and participate in their strike actions and blockades. The resistance of the logistics workers has been an incentive for workers in other sectors where migrant workers are employed (like in the hotel industry and the recycling industry) to start their own struggle. They also have been joined by other social movements such as the movement for the right of housing. IKEA is now trying to interrupt this successful cycle of struggles.

In Piacenza, in June 2014, 24 warehouse workers have been fired, and all of them are members of the Basis Union S.I.Cobas.

Let's show our solidarity on the action day against IKEA on July 26th 2014!

Skype interviews with video activists from several countries

kanalB.net

Skype interviews with four video collectives who regularly report on workers' struggles: Reelnews in the UK, Diakoptes in Greece, laborbeat in USA and Mosireen in Egypt.

We wanted to know why these collectives decided to make videos about workers' struggles, the problems they confronted, and the echo these videos have.

These interviews were part of a discussion we organised in Mai 2014 in Berlin about the role of video activism in workers' struggle compared to similar experiences in the 70s, particularly the experience of the Medvedkine group in France (watch here the interview we made with one of its founding members: Bruno Muel).

Since 2011 and the new wave of struggles (including workers' struggles) that followed the economic crisis, video collectives like laborbeat, Diakoptes, Mosireen and Reelnews have been crucial in documenting the realities of struggles at the workplace. Now, in countries where these struggles are ebbing, like in Egypt, they are facing increasing difficulties and repression.

The cycle of struggles in the logistics sector in Italy

Background interview with a logistics worker and two activists of the rank-and-file union S.I.Cobas

kanalB.net

Through militant strikes over the last four years, the mostly migrant workforce in the logistics sector in Italy have managed to substantially improve their working conditions. Treated with violent arrogance and regularly defrauded out of a part of their salary in the past, they've now won 'normal' working conditions in most workplaces.

Because of these achievements, more and more workers are organizing with the rank and file union S.I.Cobas (7.000 members – 150 new inscriptions every week). Without any paid staff, they have organized the sector in a way that enables them to fight together on a national level. Because of this they were able to win strikes  in places where initially, only a small part of the workforce participated in a strike. Moreover, their struggles were a force that were able to integrate the Italian radical left, which strongly supported them.

- Background interview with a logistics worker and two activists of the rank-and-file union S.I.Cobas.

Video about the uprising in Bosnia in February 2014

The protests started in Tuzla on February 4th, when workers of several privatized factories demonstrated to demand the wages and benefits that hadn't be paid to them for years. When they demonstrated with other workers on the 5th of February, they were brutally attacked by the police. This provoked a massive movement of solidarity by younger people and unemployed, who took to the streets and stormed and burned the government building of canton Tuzla, forcing the government to resign.

Protests spread across Bosnia and many solidarity demos were organized in other ex-Yugoslavia countries: in Serbia, in Croatia, in Slovenia but also in Montenegro and Macedonia.

In the video, which combines TV pictures and our own footage, protesters speak about their situation and we see what happened in the streets. It seems remarkable how many angry old people participated in this protests.

When they demonstrated with other workers on the 5th of February, they were brutally attacked by the police. This provoked a massive movement of solidarity by younger people and unemployed, who took to the streets and stormed and burned the government building of canton Tuzla, forcing the government to resign (local authorities in Bosnia-Herzegovina are more important than national ones). 2013 Strike at Alfa Laval, Pune, India

kanalB.net

Contract workers at this Swedish-owned company have been on strike since October 1st. The company announced a year ago that they want to shift production to another plant in 2015, and got rid of 400 contract workers. At this point the remaining contract workers formed a union.

Harassment by the management, big wage differentials between them and the permanent workers, work pressure and job insecurity all fed into reasons for the strike. They want permanent status.

In many ways, this strike is typical of many that happen in india, where the management quickly hires replacements so as to limit the impact on production, and the threat and fear of police repression produce an over-reliance by some workers on the union, which often steers the strike into legalistic and symbolic actions that reach a dead-end and keep the workers isolated from other workers e.g. others that work in the area with similar conditions and grievances.

Because of the lack of health insurance protection and massive cuts to the healthcare system, the number of patients is steadily increasing. There are currently lots of scandals happening in the organic food sector. The focus of attention lies with the large organic farms and the question of whether organic products are actually healthier or better for the environment. But nobody mentions the working conditions within the organic sector. Is there generally an expectation that they are better than in traditional agriculture? Is that actually possible?

This film is a short documentary about the case of Conchita L., an apprentice at an organic farm who earns 1,30 euros an hour. When her boss, a local Green politician, offered to pay her in vegetables, she went to get advice from the FAU anarch0-syndicalist union, who supported her in her subsequent struggle.

In order to stop those (egalitarian) struggles and push through capitalism a general attack on women and the female body was started. The peak of this attack was the burning of the witches.

From June 23 to 28 Miguel Sanz - activist of the andalusian independent union SAT - is on a tour to inform about the current struggle.

SAT was founded in 2007 as the successor organisation of the rural worker's union SOC. Since then, workers organized with SAT have engaged in direct action and many blockades to apply pressure towards attaining their demands. This was a very successful strategy and SAT gained a lot of members.

This mobilisation in Spain's poorest region was met by harsh repression, by which the government tries to immobilize SAT. Courts issued prison sentences of a total of 29 years, and fines currently amount to 328.000 Euros.

A SAT comrade will inform us about the current events in Berlin, Poznán, Hamburg and Köln, to organize solidarity for the SAT union.
